BAR HARBOR — Sixty players and dozens of spectators helped raise over $500 for the Hancock County SPCA recently during a student-led volleyball tournament.

Mount Desert Island High School senior Lydia DaCorte organized what she dubbed a “Paw”-lleyball Tournament at the school on Nov. 10 to benefit the animal shelter.

DaCorte, who is interested in pursuing event planning as a career, organized the tournament for her senior exhibition project.

“For my project, I was thinking what I could do to get experience in [event planning], and my teacher suggested this,” said DaCorte. “I’ve always loved animals and did a lot of volunteering at the SPCA when I was younger.”

Boys from MDI High School, Ellsworth High School, George Stevens Academy and Calais High School participated in the tournament, with the Trojans’ volleyball team refereeing and keeping score of the matches.

“We just had the girls’ flag football game, so this is kind of an answer to that,” said DaCorte.

Team entry fees, ticket and concession sales are what drove the SPCA donation.
