Trojans advance to quarterfinals

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity volleyball team beat Cape Elizabeth High School 3-2 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs.

It was a hard-fought battle for both the Trojans (10-5) and the Capers (8-7) and the first time MDI has gone to five sets all season.

MDI had momentum on its side in the first two sets, winning 25-19 and 27-25, but the power shifted to the Capers in the third and fourth sets, which they won 25-18 and 25-14.

During the three-minute break ahead of the fifth set, the MDI girls decided then and there that they weren’t going to let the playoffs slip away.

The Trojans came into the final set full of energy, agility and power, besting Cape Elizabeth 15-7.

Grace Higgins had four aces, 11 rotation points, seven kills and three digs.

Mackenzie Hannah had three aces, one kill, one block, 19 assists, three digs and 12 rotation points.

Hannah Chamberlain was 15/15 on serving and had eight rotation points and three digs.

Alexis Clarito was 10/10 serving, had one kill, 10 receptions and six digs.

The Trojans head to Falmouth tomorrow to face the Yachtsmen (9-3) at 4
