BAR HARBOR — A solid team performance propelled the Mount Desert Island High School varsity volleyball team to a win over rival Ellsworth Tuesday at home in three sets, 3-0. Set scores were 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23.
With the win, the Lady Trojans improve to 11-1 on the season. They stand at third seed in Class A. Ellsworth falls to 5-6.
MDI made quick work of the first set, 25-12.
In the second, a Sarah Shelton block at the net would have put the Eagles on the board first, but she was just over the line, and the point went to MDI. The Trojans pulled ahead to 6-1 on aces by Riley Mooers and Aubrie Boyce before kills by Ellsworth’s Sarah Shelton and Sammy Mason brought the score to 10-6.
MDI senior Camilla Thomassen-Tai was able to respond to Shelton’s high-powered offense with a timely block at the net and several digs. Sarah Phelps also helped keep some of Shelton’s deadly spikes in play. The Trojans kept a lead of at least five points. Grace Higgins had several kills, then an ace to end the set 25-17.
The Eagles fared better in the third set, beginning with a 2-0 lead. An ace by Delaney Sargent sent MDI scrambling and tied up the game 5-5. A Rachel Bunker kill gave the Eagles a 9-8 edge before Elise Robertson answered it with a kill for MDI. Ellsworth’s Sargent and Mason teamed up at the net for a few key blocks. The set was tied again at 12-12.
The Eagles rallied again at the end of the set after being down 20-15. Shelton had two kills hit their marks, and Jenna Haslam received a difficult serve. They fought to 24-23, but Phelps ended the match with a clean kill for a 25-23 win.
For Ellsworth, Shelton had 17 service receptions and 7 kills. Sammy Mason had 4 digs. Jenna Haslam had 14 service receptions.
For MDI, Emma Forthofer had 9 digs and 6 service receptions. Thomassen-Tai had 4 aces and 6 kills. Phelps had 3 kills and 5 digs. Boyce had 5 kills and 3 aces.
“Our girls did a lot of things really well,” Coach Corey Papadopoli said. “Earlier in the season, our offense was a little hot and cold, so one of the things we’ve been trying to do is shore up the defense so we can get more opportunities to get the offense going, which I think we did a pretty good job of tonight.”
MDI is set to host Calais Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. A senior recognition ceremony is planned to follow the 5 p.m. J.V. game. Their last regular season game is Monday evening at 6 p.m. at Cony.
