BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity volleyball team improved to 4-3 after a convincing win over Ellsworth on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at home.

In the three-set match, the Trojans won 3-0 with set scores of 25-23, 25-10 and 25-19.

“I think we started out slowly, but in the end, they played pretty well,” Coach Corey Papadopoli said after the game. “They hustled a lot, and they took a bunch of great swings, which is good to see.”

After a close first set, Papadopoli said the team moved the game ahead in the second one and, he said, “Everyone played, which showed that we have some depth.”

Ordinarily, the Trojan girls play against the Eagles in pre-season scrimmage, but the two teams faced each other for the first time this season on Wednesday; however, that didn’t affect the team’s strategy.

“We just wanted to play our game, work our system,” added Papadopoli. “Because we need to keep practicing that, and we weren’t trying to adjust anything they [the Eagles] were doing. We were just trying to play our game.”

For MDI, Caroline McMinimy had 6 kills and 2 digs. Aubrie Boyce had 5 kills, 1 ace and 2 digs. Riley Mooers had 1 assist, 4 aces, 4 service receptions and 7 digs; and Mackenzie Hanna had 18 assists, 4 aces and 2 digs.

Even though the Trojan girls fell 3-0 to both Yarmouth High School and Gorham High School later in the week, Papadopoli remains optimistic about the performance of his squad.

“While the results were not what we would have liked, the effort and the development we saw this weekend show us we’re heading in the right direction,” he said. “We played two tough teams in Yarmouth and Gorham, and while at times we struggled to put points on the board, the defense and overall hustle were well beyond anything we’ve seen from our team to date. They were up to the challenge and played hard.”
