ELLSWORTH — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity volleyball team (6-2) swept Ellsworth High School (5-3) 3-0 in their first meeting of the season last week.
The Trojans beat the rival Eagles 25-11, 25-20 and 25-18.
“It was a good match, and we played strong from the start, serving tough and passing well,” said Head Coach Corey Papadopoli. “We also hit better than we had all season, and the team cruised to a three-set victory.”
Alaina Duley had four aces, two kills, three digs and 15 rotational points. Grace Higgins had three aces, 10 kills and one dig. Julia Watras had one kill, 14 assists and one dig, while Emma Watras had one ace, six kills and one assist.
Over the weekend, the Trojans felt the sting of their first two losses of the season to two southern Maine teams.
MDI traveled to Scarborough High School last Friday night and came away with their first loss of 0-3.
“MDI faced its toughest competition of the season so far against Scarborough on Friday night. While we played with them at times, and did a lot of things well, we were unable to sustain any momentum,” said Papadopoli. “Our serving game was off, and this made it hard for us to keep up with Scarborough’s offense.
“Overall, I think it was a good match, and we see the work we have to do, but it’s not insurmountable.”
The following day, the girls traveled to Falmouth High School.
After a promising first set, the Trojans couldn’t keep up the momentum and ultimately lost 1-4.
“It’s hard to win on the road, especially after traveling a long way, and I think we lost mental focus in this game,” said Papadopoli. “The girls played up, never getting down or frustrated with each other, but we still have some work to do in the mental game.”
The Trojans host Machias on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. and two teams this Saturday, Oct. 1: Greely at 12:30 p.m. and Gorham at 3:30 p.m.
